Rob Papen’s Predator VSTi Synth Review

Rob Papen’s Predator VSTi Synth Review

Demo Link:

There is nothing bad I can say about Predator VSTi. It is a staple in my arsenal of synths for nearly every track! Whether I need interesting drawn out pads with complex envelope looping and staging, mind bending effects and pitch sweeps, clean bass, or hardcore distorted mayhem, it easily handles everything I throw at it.

With three easy to use generators, you can design the base signal with a range of options in octave, phasing, waveform, frequency modulation, etc. Filtering is a breeze with the interface Rob has designed, applying your cuts, resonance, lfo (which is attached directly to the right of the envelope with a convenient sync to tempo button for your 1/32 – 16/1 wobbing enjoyment), distortion, keytracking etc all in one spot.

You can control the ADSFR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Fade, Release) of your filter and main output separately, extending the range of your soundscape dimensions. Three built in effects banks help you fine tune the ambiance or freakishness of your thus created frequency, and the standard affair of arpeggiation step sequenced matrix & gliding/polyphony options  round out the design aspects of Predator.

You can probably see at this point why I love it, but if you’d like to hear a few examples of sounds made with Predator check out these tracks:

Annias – Sliders (Hybrid Dubstep/Breaks/Drum&Bass) by annias

Annias – judgement dub (dubstep/breaks hybrid) by annias

Hoepfully that gives you some decent insight into this amazing VSTi and what it’s capable of doing. Here are some word’s from Papen’s site about the synth:

Predator is a “phat sounding” killer synthesizer that combines inspiring presets and first-class features to make this your ‘go-to’ synth for contemporary music production.
The user interface has been designed so that almost all controls are visible on screen, making it fun and incredibly easy-to-use. And if you’re unsure about a particular synth function, simply right click your mouse to access the help screen.

Predator is packed with powerful features such as Preset Morphing, Intelligent Preset Variation, MIDI and Synth Controllable FX, Unison Detune, Chord Memory and an extremely versatile Arpeggiator.

Included preset banks: HipHop (NY, Club, DirtySouth and Gfunk) banks. Jump, hardcore, breakbeat, various trance styles, DnB banks and more…

Last but not least …Predator also includes PredatorFX, allowing you to use the incredible filters, modulations, effects and vocoder as an FX plug-in within your music host.

Predator 1.5 is out now with even more presets (included Junkie XL presets) and new features like a great Bank manager!

There are a ridiculous amount of presets included in Predator to get you started on your sound design quest, and there are many more free and purchasable preset patches available around the internet to expand your library. Check out places like for patch links and also stay up to date with the newest releases and upgrades of all sorts of audio software.

In the coming weeks I’ll include my own patch bank of sounds I’ve created with Predator for the Earthside Massive crew, much respect for checking out the article. You can find out more about it here on Rob’s official site or click the picture of Predator at the top of this page.

Happy sound smithing,
