This is a quick introduction to the software that I generally use. I’m not going into detail in this post as each will get its fair shake with individual posts. Feel free to hit me up with questions about any of them, I’ll be developing some basic and advanced material for each.
We’ll start of with the DAW’s:
Ableton Live – http://www.ableton.com/
As of late I’m running all of my other DAW’s inside ableton as VST’s or ReWired. With an amazing ability to handle both live and step sequenced style input, I find it provides the best of both worlds with an amazingly useful interface. One click midi mapping also comes in very handy for getting ahold of your projects in any way you can imagine. This is definately one of the best DAW’s in existence.
FL Studio – http://flstudio.image-line.com/

I have been using FL for over 11 years now, and it has continued to prove a very useful DAW for many aspects of my production routine. The recent addition of the Edison wave editor polished has become invaluable for manipulating waveforms, and as of version 8 you can now export mp3s in bitrates higher than 320kbps (so your dog can enjoy the extra frequencies?) Nevertheless, if I had to choose one DAW to use for the rest of my life, it would be FL. I currently run it standalone as well as inside a channel of ableton so it functions as an instrument. Easy mixer handling with sends, automation recording, and an amazing interface for the win!
Scratch Live – Serato – http://www.scratchlive.net/

Flawless midi time-coded vinyl translation. Period. Just keep your needles clean for a good signal and it will not fail you. If you have the extra cash, get the Rane TTM57SL mixer with Serato built in, it is unbelievable ( http://www.rane.com/ttm57sl.html )

Virtual DJ 4.2 – http://www.virtualdj.com/

Tables are fun but with a decent midi controller Virtual DJ takes mixing to a new level, I highly recommend this program if you want to mix but find yourself without a pair of technics. Easy to learn and massive compatability with presets for most controls and customizable midi programming, do what you want!
There are a handful of other audio software programs I utilize occasional for various needs, including Sonic Foundry Acid 4.0 (I don’t prefer the versions since Sony purchased it), WaveLab, and many VST and VSTi’s which will recieve a topic of their own soon.
Take a peek at the aforementioned software and have a good time making music!
